About

After Hours launched in January 2007. The primary purpose of After Hours is to provide a place to capture technology thoughts, notes and observations. Much of the content will be addressing questions (common or just interesting) I receive from my students. Some content will be regarding articles of interest I encounter and perhaps reviews on books or other goods.

It’s a blog, so feel free to comment.

Also, if there is something you’d like to see, drop me a line.

About the Author

My name is Hal Smith. I’m currently an Assistant Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State New Kensington – a little to the northeast of Pittsburgh.

My formal training is in Mathematics – specifically abstract algebra and number theory. I received my PhD (and my other degrees) from University at Albany, SUNY in 1997. Though I had planned an academic career after graduation, I landed an industry gig as a software engineer and spent the next five years honing my craft in a range of environments from embedded to super-computing systems and have had my share of experiences with a number of languages and technologies.

I spend a good deal of my time thinking about software architecture and design, generally of the object- and component-oriented kind. Being a mathematician at heart, I am a modeler and embrace UML as a convenient standard. While it’s far from perfect, I think UML is under-rated and often mis-used. I like to tinker with UML tools and have yet to find a good, all-purpose modeling tool.
